In the heart of the Estós Valley, at an altitude of 1,890 meters, the Estós Refuge is much more than just a place to sleep in the mountains. It's a stop with soul, one of those places you remember for the scenery, but also for the people who welcome you upon arrival.
With a capacity for 54 people in bunk beds, the refuge is staffed year-round and has been part of the mountain life of the Benasque Valley for decades. Today, after 33 years of dedication, Joaquin continues to manage and care for the Estós Refuge along with Nico, who joined as a warden in 2021.
That human touch is evident as soon as you arrive.
The refuge retains the authentic atmosphere of Pyrenean mountain huts: a warm welcome, mountain conversation, home-cooked meals, and a simple understanding of hospitality. Here, you don't just come to spend the night; you also come to stop, rest, and enjoy the journey.
Reaching the Estós Refuge can be a perfect day trip. From the Estós parking area, the path climbs the valley following the GR 11, through forests, past water, across meadows, and with increasingly expansive views. Along the way, you can visit the Gorgas Galantes, with its waterfalls, and pass by the Cabaña del Turmo, famous for appearing in the song "20 de abril" by Celtas Cortos.
And at the end of the trail, one of the best rewards awaits: sitting down, recharging, and enjoying lunch with views of the Estós Valley.
The refuge's home-cooked meals are part of the experience. After a hike, simple, well-prepared dishes, like fried eggs with ham, taste especially good here. The Estós Refuge is a stopover point for major routes and climbs, but also a wonderful option for those seeking a more tranquil experience: hiking through one of the most beautiful valleys in the Pyrenees, arriving at a lively refuge, and sharing a meal, scenery, and conversation in the heart of the mountains.
