There are peaks that are conquered and others that are reached with respect. Aragüells is one of the latter. A demanding but straightforward climb, it offers walkers a journey through some of the most solid and sober landscapes of the Maladeta massif. From the mountain lakes to the summit, everything on this route has the weight of permanence.
The route starts in Senarta, taking a forest track that leads to the Coronas refuge. From there, a well-marked trail enters the ravine of the same name. The first part runs between forest and water, in a cool and shady environment, ideal for picking up pace.
After a steady climb, the landscape opens up at La Pleta de Coronas, where the vegetation gives way to granite and the first mountain lakes. The Ibonet marks a change of tone: from here on, the terrain becomes more mineral, and the horizon wider.
The ascent continues along the Coronas mountain lakes, first the Inferior, then the Superior. Aneto is now clearly visible, dominating the landscape, while the Cregüeña pass looms in the background.
The last section is more technical, although there are no difficult passages. The summit of Aragüells (3,044 m) is reached after a final climb over rocky terrain. From the top, the views are spectacular: the Ibón de Cregüeña lake just on the other side, the Cresta del Maldito ridge to the west, the Llosas to the east and Aneto dominating the whole scene.
The return journey follows the same route, allowing you to take in all the contrasts of this route on the way down: forest, lakes, rock and, in the background, the line of peaks that makes the effort worthwhile.
